Evaluating Past Students Work
To get a good idea of how to make our thriller sequence, we watched some of the work done by past students to see how they met the criteria and to see what effects it had on the audience.
We looked at a sequence called The Return and we felt that they met a lot of the criteria set to get a level 4.
The music used matched what was shown on screen and it fitted the genre of the film, it created suspense without being too scary and it made it seem quite creepy. It varied throughout the clip to emphasis certain images which worked well because it made you feel more shocked at what you saw.
They used a variety of shots including close ups of a face, long shots to show location and some media closeups. They also used low and high angle shots to introduce us to the characters.
We thought that the titles they used fitted with the film as they used different fonts on top of images rather than using plain black screens which would have made it boring.
The lighting began quite light as it was filmed outside which despite the music makes you feel like you are somewhere safe in the film however as we zoom in, it begins to get darker and then continues throughout the rest of the clip to have dark setting with shadows. By doing this it makes it more thrilling and mysterious which makes the audience more interested.
We thought that the way they have used a blurred iris at the beginning when zooming in on the character worked well because it made us focus more on the character rather than what was around him. They used a similar effect in the shape of a rectangle when showing some of the later images but this time they made it black rather than transparent. This was good because again it made you focus more on what the image was and it also made it seem more dark and spooky.
The way they quickly cut from one image to another worked well because it made it quick and made you pay attention to what was actually happening however sometimes it was too fast because when we watched it again, we noticed things that we hadn't seen the first time round so if they were to do it again, despite making it spooky, they could have slowed it down so that the images were easier to see.
